Metrics Adds Liquids, Creams, Gels To Manufacturing Capabilities

By Pharmaceutical Processing | April 18, 2013

Metrics Inc. now has the ability to produce non-sterile liquids, creams and gels for a broad range of pharmaceutical applications.

The company’s scientists stand prepared to manage the formulation development of new products or the technology transfer of existing products for manufacturing and packaging – as well as provide any necessary laboratory support services.

“The addition of liquids, creams and gels to Metrics’ portfolio of capabilities is just the latest chapter in what has been our tale from the start – delivering demonstrated scientific and operational excellence in response to our clients’ growing and changing needs,” said Phil Hodges, president. “It is an honor to serve our clients in this new way and, hopefully, continue to build upon our long-time relationships based on mutual trust and respect.”

The addition of creams, liquids and gels to Metrics’ existing portfolio of formulation and manufacturing capabilities comes as a result of its recent acquisition by Mayne Pharma Group Limited.

The company’s cream suite can manufacture two- and three-phase suspensions and emulsions, including pastes, creams, lotions and gels. Its two filling lines – which are modular and can be assembled according to product format – and its liquid processing equipment can produce batch sizes ranging from 250 to 2,000 kilograms.

Features of the cream suite include: Mixing turbine with counter-rotating side sweep; recirculation with in-line homogenizer and in-line colloid mill options; steam and chilled water options; a vacuum-charging system; bottom-to-bottom transfers; low-pressure manufacture; calibrated load cells and display systems; side vessels piped directly into vessels with capabilities of 160, 350 and 1,400 liters; clean-in-place systems; and discharge into 1,000 kilograms food-grade pallecons or 200-liter poly-lined drums for transfer to filling lines.

The company’s liquid suite can manufacture bulk liquids, including mouthwash, antiseptics, elixirs and suspensions. A flame-proofed area also is available and suitable for processing flammable liquids. The suite’s four liquid manufacturing vessels produce batch sizes ranging from 350 to 6,000 liters.

Features of the liquid suite include: One-, two- and three-propeller shaft stirrers; calibrated load cells and displays; powder loading options; bottom-to-bottom transfers; recirculation capabilities with filtration, colloid mill and homogenizer options; vacuum-charging system; in-line filtration systems; and discharge into holding containers or piped direct to filling lines.
