Healthcare Packaging EXPO Provides the Latest in Pharmaceutical Processing

By Sean Riley, Senior Director, Media and Industry Communications, PMMI | September 14, 2017

Insights and technological innovations provide solutions to a wide range of industry challenges.

Technologies and solutions for the pharmaceutical industry will be on display this fall at Healthcare Packaging EXPO, September 25-27, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Products, equipment, and technology featured will include automation, continuous processing, cleaning and sterilization, cold chain logistics, commissioning, qualification and validation, dose processing, quality control and assurance, and track and trace solutions.

Co-located with North America’s largest packaging trade show, PACK EXPO Las Vegas 2017, the event will convene 250 exhibitors across 100,000 net square feet equipped with demonstrations of supply chain innovations for pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and medical device manufacturing.

Healthcare Packaging EXPO is the successor to the most comprehensive pharmaceutical event of recent years, and the show continues to offer vast solutions for attendees and business opportunities for exhibitors.

Owned and produced by PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, both shows will collectively bring together more than 2,000 exhibitors and 30,000 attendees, including C-level executives, engineers, plant managers, researchers and developers, brand and marketing managers, quality controllers, specifiers, purchasers, and packaging designers.

Powering Innovation in Pharma Production

Biopharmaceutical, nutraceutical and medical device manufacturers will see firsthand an array of solutions to confidently manage new industry trends and challenges. In addition to serving as a hub of innovation, the show will also be a source of insight and education about improved efficiencies for healthcare manufacturing and processing.

Pharmaceutical and medical device processors will have access to exhibitor-provided solutions on the event floor as well as educational programming during the course of the show. Supplier-led educational opportunities and insight from industry experts will address a range of topical trends regarding regulatory compliance, automation, and serialization technology.

Information and Inspiration at the Innovation Stage

Attendees can benefit from a range of free 30-minute supplier-led educational sessions on the show floor occurring throughout the day addressing best practices and exhibiting breakthrough technologies.

Each distinctive session will focus on how consumer trends and industry issues are impacting different markets in the healthcare industry. Innovation Stage seminars will be offered at both shows.

The Reusable Packaging Pavilion

The Reusable Packaging Pavilion, located in the South Upper Hall, will provide a single destination for processors and manufacturers seeking sustainable solutions.

The pavilion, sponsored by the Reusable Packaging Association (RPA), offers top of the line applications for reusable products, services, and supply chain logistics. Advancements in reusable packaging for sustainable business operations will be featured by more than 30 of the industry’s leading companies.

While reusable packaging and sustainable solutions are not new ideas, implementing reusables in the pharmaceutical supply chain can present various challenges. According to PMMI’s Pharmaceutical & Medical Devices: Trends and Opportunities in Packaging Operations report, most sustainability challenges arise from the characteristics of sustainable packaging materials.

In some cases, sustainable materials can cause machine issues because of lightweighting due to different levels of purity, particularly for secondary cartons, ultimately making it difficult to maintain favorable production rates.

Attendees can learn how pharmaceutical companies address these industry challenges with new technologies on display at the show. Attendees can also participate in seminars at The Reusable Packaging Learning Center.

Containers and Materials Pavilion

Pharmaceutical and medical device brand managers and designers can benefit from the various showcased solutions at the Containers and Materials Pavilion taking place in the Lower South Hall of the convention center.

The pavilion will showcase paperboard, glass, metal, plastic, flexible and resealable packaging, labeling and decoration technologies, and innovative container solutions for various industries, including healthcare.

As new formulations for biological drugs are increasing in popularity, new packaging challenges are emerging along with these innovations. For instance, using glass vials as a packaging format has produced some unforeseen challenges.

Unique formulations can sometimes produce biological properties that delaminate the inner surface of the vial, shedding unwanted glass particles into the drug. Pharmaceutical manufacturers can meet with suppliers to be certain that their package designs are manufactured with the necessary barrier properties to mitigate these risks.

Registration for both shows includes admission to both events. Registration is $30 until September 1, when the price increases to $100.
