AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Several pharmacy groups are suing Maine over a new law that allows residents to import prescription drugs from foreign countries through the mail.

The Maine Pharmacy Association, Retail Association of Maine and Maine Society of Health System Pharmacists Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America and several pharmacists filed the suit Tuesday in the United States District Court. They say the law will jeopardize the U.S.’s pharmaceutical distribution system and Maine residents’ health.

The measure became law in June without the Gov. Paul LePage’s signature. It allows residents to buy drugs through firms like CanaRx, which takes prescriptions written by U.S. doctors and fills them in licensed pharmacies in Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.

Supporters say it allows Maine residents to buy medications at a cheaper price.
