Fette Unveils New Capsule Filling Machine at INTERPHEX 2016

By Meg Snyder | April 27, 2016

On Tuesday, April 26, Fette Compacting unveiled its first capsule filling machine at INTERPHEX, which doubles the previously set output record at 400,000 capsules per hour.

The FEC40, available in two configurations, utilizes some of the technologies from Fette’s tablet presses and is the world’s first capsule filling machine that follows the Duplex Concept. It is also the first capsule filling machine that is driven fully by servo and torque motors.

Although the machine cannot be customized as far as the specs of the machine, the Fette team was very excited about entering into the capsule industry, in addition to their presence in the tablet industry.

“Fette Compacting, in the tablet press industry, is a very successful company. We have been able to establish machine series where the customer doesn’t need to learn machine by machine. Once you drive and you operate a Fette Compacting tablet press, if you have one machine you already know how to work on the other machines,” said Olaf Mueller, President of Fette Compacting. “We will follow the same line with our capsule filling machines.”

“We will focus on two dosing systems out of the five systems that are in the market,” Mueller continued. “We will cover the pharmaceutical and nutritional market with this machine [FEC40]. We [also] have one other innovation we took over from the tablet presses—an exchangeable dosing module, which means you can change the machine in 15 minutes.”

“Every powder and every pellet can be used on this machine,” explained Mueller when asked what this capsule filling machine can handle as far as materials.

Here are some of the features of the FEC40:

  • Type: Duplex Concept
  • Cycles (min-1): max. 140
  • Capsule output (units/h): max 400,000
  • Number of stations: 12
  • Number of capsules per holder: 24
  • Capsule sizes: 000-5
  • Capsule types: HGC and HPMC (other types available upon request)
  • Dosing systems: Tamping pin, pellet (up to two types of pellets)
  • Dimensions (mm): 2,168 x 1,648 x 2,068
  • Weight (kg): approx. 4,000
  • Customer network: 3 phases + PE
  • Electrical supply parameters: Operating voltage 400 – 480 V, frequency 50/60 Hz

With a price tag of over $1 million, this machine bears promise for industry output and capsule filling capabilities and is a leap for Fette, as a company, into a new market.
