MORRISTOWN, N.J. (AP) — Watson Pharmaceuticals Inc. said Monday it received approval for a generic version of the high blood pressure and angina drug Toprol XL, and plans to begin shipping the product immediately. Watson said the Food and Drug Administration approval 25 mg and 50 mg extended-release tablets of metoprolol. The drug is sold by AstraZeneca PLC under the Toprol XL name. Watson said U.S. sales of Toprol XL and generic equivalents totaled $628 million for the year ended June 30. The drug will be made by the Watson Laboratories subsidiary.
